Kaiser Foundation Forms Energy Policy Institute

George Kaiser has created a National Energy Policy Institute to examine alternative fuels with an $8 million contribution from his family foundation.

“This has interested George Kaiser for sometime,” said Ken Levit, foundation executive director.

The foundation is enabling a number of potential contributors toward greater energy independence and less dependency upon foreign oil.

The Tulsa-based think tank will help rank and prioritize alternative energy options, Levit said.

The multi-year effort expects to have a report by January.

Former Alaska Gov. and Tulsa native Tony Knowles has been named executive director of the institute, which the foundation made a four-year commitment.

“We’ll see if we are making a difference if it appears we are making a contribution to the debate,” Levit said.

The institute will be based at the University of Tulsa and will work with experts around the U.S.
