University of Tulsa
The University of Tulsa continues to retain its top spot among Oklahoma colleges in the annual U.S. News & World Report higher education rankings.
TU rose eight places to No. 83 among the nation's best universities. The University of Oklahoma is in a five-way tie for 108th, the same rank it was last year.
Oklahoma State University is listed in the third tier of universities, and Oral Roberts University is in the fourth, or last, tier. Universities in these categories are not ranked and are listed alphabetically. Both colleges are in the same tier as in last year's report.
The biggest change for University of Tulsa from last year was a 25 percent decrease in acceptance rate, meaning the university has been more selective, according to news release from the university.
Officials believe the school's student-to-faculty ratio of 10-to-1 and average class size of 19 play a factor in TU's improvement. The university also increased in percentage of students who were in the top 10 percent of their high school class, according to the release.
TU has become one of the nation's great universities, President Steadman Upham said in a statement.
"Our deliberate actions during the past decade
have allowed TU to select a student body from among the nation's top students while creating a vibrant, residential campus experience for these students once they arrive in Tulsa," he said.OSU spokesman Gary Shutt said the university compiles statistics similar to what the U.S. News & World Report uses in an online ledger. He encouraged prospective students to use it for information and comparisons.
"It's got a lot of the kind of information people need in making a college decision," Shutt said.
The U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on academic quality indicators in the categories of peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.
